Quonset Huts are a symbol of America

12/13/08

Quonset huts were at first fabricated during the world wars to provide better shelter to troops than tents. The design was that of a tube with a semi circular cross section that imitated the British design for the same purpose called the Nissen Hut. The huts get their name from the native word for frontier in the place where they were first made. They are tunnel shaped structures made of metal with plywood doors and windows at each end. Quonset huts were no longer needed by the armed forces after the war and they were sold to the public.

They are now used for residences churches meeting halls small business establishments warehouses and garages. The main conveniences of Quonset huts are they are fabricated in a factory and are easy to assemble and take apart. Quonset huts are very popular in the state of Alaska because the metal shell keeps residents snug inside without too much exposure to the cold. The huts are prefabricated and therefore easily portable. The huts have plenty of space because of the absence of thick walls and other constrictive structures and have proved ideal for places where large groups can meet without feeling cramped. One of the many symbols that reflect American skill good sense and independence is seen in the design of the Quonset huts. Find out more.
